AMD published a press release in which it announces new 64-bit 65-nanometre CPU chips codenamed Brisbane. For the general public, these will be called AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 5000+, 4800+, 4400+, and 4000+.

All four processors are dual-core and will have 2x512MB cache. The fastest of the four announced processors, X2 5000+ will work at 2.6GHz.

Unfortunately for AMD, these processors won't completely bridge the gap between AMD's finest and Intel's Core 2 Duo chips, which will stay in the lead. This is just a step in their transition to 65mm, which was necessary for AMD if they want to keep putting out energy-efficient chips.

The prices for the four chips will be as follows: 4000+ will cost $169, 4400+ $214, 4800+ $271, and 5000+ $301.

The latest iSuppli report shows that AMD is now finally among the top 10 semiconductor makers in the world. AMD pushed quite a lot of places since last year, advancing from number 15 to number 7

The first 10 list looks like this: Intel, Samsung, Texas Instruments, Toshiba, STMicroelectronics, Renesas Technology, AMD, Hynix, NSP, Freescale Semiconductor.

AMD's revenue went up 90.7% from $3,917 millions in 2005. to $7,471 millions in 2006. It now holds 2.9% of the total semiconductor market, with its closest competitor being Hynix which holds 2.8%, and is also in the top 10 list for the first time.

Full report here.

AMD's 4x4 platform is finally available to reviewers, and the reactions are pretty positive

4x4 is basically two dual core Athlon 64 FX-70 CPUs, working on a Socket 1207 n680 motherboard, which is seemingly a reworked version of an Opteron workstation motherboard.

Without further ado, go read the review here. Personally, I like the results, but I don't like the fact that it's a powerhungry, extremely hot beast. Sorry, AMD - I'm still looking at n680i motherboard + Core 2 Quad combination as my dream computer.
